The heaviest known star, at its birth more than 320 times the mass of the Sun, has been discovered at the edge of our galaxy by British astronomers.
Researchers at the University of Sheffield found the stellar giant R136a1, using the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile and data from the Hubble Space Telescope, in the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small ’satellite’ galaxy which orbits the Milky Way.
Previously, the largest known stars were around 150 times the mass of the Sun, and this was believed to be close to the cosmic size limit. As stars get larger, the amount of energy created in their cores grows, faster than the force of gravity which holds them together. This energy makes stars more luminous.

City bosses in Sheffield have insisted they will take forward the programme outlined in their bid to become UK City of Culture, despite missing out to winner Londonderry. The Steel City beat 29 applicants to make the final shortlist of four with Derry, Norwich and Birmingham, but Culture Minister Ed Vaizey announced the 2013 crown will not be coming to South Yorkshire.
Monty Python star and Sheffield son Michael Palin said on BBC’s One Show, which broadcast the announcement: “Derry is a worthy winner - but our time will come. “Sheffield has undergone an amazing transformation and has a lot going for it as a cultural centre. “It has great theatres and big names - from Joe Cocker to Jarvis Cocker.”

Team AWNTY 2012 is a team of three people racing to the North Pole in April 2012. We want to win this endurance race across nearly 600 Kilometres of Arctic ice. The race will be started near the most remote part of Canada, Resolute Settlement, and finish at the Magnetic North Pole. We have two years to train and raise money for our team entry fee and our five chosen charities.Team AWNTY 2012 are not extreme athletes. We are not experienced Arctic explorers but we do have motivation, drive and enthusiasm. Our tenacity and training will insure we win through slick administration to maximise on rest time and to sustain sixteen hours skiing daily. Two years of intensive training, with dedicated personal trainers will allow us to reach a much higher level of fitness and develop essential team cohesion.
Janine Lewis and Gary Neilson live in Reading and revive Health Club Reading has kindly sponsored them by providing the facilities and training advice. Darren Rossiter is primarily helping with this but there is dedicated support from Kathryn, Zita and all the team at Caversham. Spence lives in Stoke and he has the sponsorship for training at Keele University.
Throughout the race the team will be unsupported by any outside element apart from a daily contact with the race organisers via Satphone. We will pull our own supplies by sledge, weighing over 50Kg, for the entirety of the race which can take between nine and eighteen days depending on conditions. We will be skiing for 16 hours or more each day, resting for only four hours as the strategy to succeed in the goal of winning this race.
The competition is tough! Teams come from all over the world and many walks of life. Some are experienced Arctic explorers or experienced high performance athletes.
The team will be crossing some of the most inhospitable and hostile parts of the Arctic region. We will be navigating through constantly shifting pack ice, overcoming tracts of melt water caused by global warming, crossing the migratory route for over 80% of the world’s population of Polar Bears and enduring temperatures of below -40c.
